Some of the undoubted stars of the Norwich Lanes Fashion Night Out were the Historical Sauces, who set up in Imelda’s Shoe Boutique and offered mini one on one tutorials on “flicks ‘n’ lips”, sharing all their best tips and tricks on how to get perfect eyeliner flicks and immaculate red lips. Given their success on the night, we thought we’d take a closer look at these talented ladies!

Bought together by a shared love of the glamour of the early twentieth century, the Glamourologist, Missy Vintage & Retro Chick are dedicated to bringing a sprinkling of that glamour to the modern day. Describing themselves as ‘historians, writers, models, hostesses, hair and fashion stylists’, the Historical Sauces can provide a pop-up reading room, vintage dressing up box, style workshops and talks on bringing vintage glamour into your life everyday. We had a quick chat with Retro Chick to get the inside story!
Despite living in the same city, we actually all met online before we met in real life. We met a few times individually at events, then one day all 3 of us got together for afternoon tea, and 3 bottle of fizz later we realised we got on really well!
What draws you to the vintage look?
We’ve all got slightly different ways that we’ve got into vintage style. But it’s a shared love of that every day glamour that bought us together. We love the history behind clothing and make up, but it’s not just that that draws us to the look.
We all like to look put together, it’s not necessarily about slavishly recreating a period style, but about taking pride in your appearance.
Tell us more about Besame
Besame is a cosmetics brand created by cosmetics historian Gabriella Hernandez. The lipsticks from the range that we sell are all based on original vintage shades and formulations, and the packaging is also based on beautiful vintage lipstick packaging. It’s gold with a lovely red pattern on it and comes in a red velvet pouch to keep it safe in your handbag. It’s a great brand as the lipsticks are really high in pigment, meaning they last ages, but also not drying.
Favourite Shop in Norwich Lanes?
There’s so many great shops in Norwich Lanes. We all love hunting for bargains in the charity shops. Immeldas is great for shoes, and of course the Lanes is full of vintage shops like Prim, Goldfinches and Antidote.
Favourite Bar/Restaurant in Norwich Lanes?
The Birdcage is a great place to go for a drink at the weekend, we also love Biddys Tea Room for a lovely afternoon tea!
What’s your top old-school glamour tip?
Sometimes the classics are the best. Try replacing some of your high tech and expensive beauty products with cheaper classics like Cold Cream to cleanse your face and setting lotion to curl your hair.
Finally, any upcoming events & future plans for the Historical Sauces?
